“I remember one person at the Mail on Sunday who had written a benefit cheats story.
[He] put the phone down to her and said,

“Oh, just ruined somebody’s life.”
That was just one of the extraordinary admissions about the practices of reporters at some of our largest newspapers in Channel 5’s recent documentary series, Sex and Power.

The three part series, which can be watched online, explores the culture at tabloid newspapers and hears first-hand from victims of press abuse.  Episode 2 in particular exposes tabloid culture at its worst.

Those interviewed include Hacked Off supporter and victim of a Mail on Sunday libel, Danielle Hindley.

Asked about the Mail’s libellous allegations against her, Danielle said,
 

“I think I just wasn’t a real person to [the journalist]. I was just a prop in what she was doing. She needed another story to go with what she had.”
Dozens of ordinary people are affected by press abuse every year.

Until national newspapers are independently regulated, they will continue to behave as if they are above the law.
