Your November newsletter from Make Votes Matter
The end of the year is in sight – but before we get there the movement for Proportional Representation has one more big, socially-distanced Action Day planned for 12th December.
Also in this month’s newsletter…
And, as always, see our campaign update for the highlights of activity across the movement at a glance.
Where Do Votes Go?
Did you know only 36% of the electorate are represented by an MP they voted for? Of the remaining 30 million eligible voters, half ended up represented by someone they didn’t vote for – and half didn’t turn out to vote at all.
Make Votes Matter supporter Ward Safi has brought this data to life – and much, much more besides – on a brilliant microsite: WhereDoVotesGo.uk.
You can even use an interactive map to find out how many voters ended up being represented in each constituency in the UK. Read Ward’s guest blog to find out what inspired him to create it.
Countdown to Action Day
It’s just two weeks until our last big Action Day of 2020 – and there’s still time to sign up for this socially distanced demonstration for equal votes.
We’ll be sending Christmas cards to our MPs calling on them to back Proportional Representation – and making a lot of noise about it on social media and in the press. Hope you can make it!
111 Constituency Labour Parties call for electoral reform
And it’s kept rising since then. At the time of writing, no less than 111 CLPs have carried motions in favour of electoral reform – over 17% of all local Labour branches.
This is fast making PR one of the most talked about and most demanded policies in the party. 2021 will be a crucial year for building on this momentum – and finally bringing Labour into line with the other opposition parties in supporting equal votes.
