Workers in the Midlands, the North East and West and Wales voted overwhelmingly to Leave
and I will tell you why the rest of the Country did not.
In the run up to Britain joining the EEC ( European Economic Community) in 1973 and at the 1975 Referendum on whether Britain should remain a member of the Common Market, many promises were made.
These included the promise of more jobs and larger market for goods made in Britain
Since then we have lost the steel, shipbuilding and coal industries all subject to EEC policies or treaties
Many other sections of manufacturing no longer exist and several of these have suffered from a switch from trade across the world to trade with Common Market members.
We now do not have a merchant fleet, the railways and docks are a former shadow of themselves.
All these industries were the basis not only of Britain’s economy but also the work forces were the backbone of the labour and trade uniuon movement
We no longer control our own fishing in coastal waters and the agricultural industry has suffered aspects of the Common Agricultural Policy which was not common.
The promise of jobs and more trade were never kept.
In fact today, rather than being an industrial nation state, the largest industry is tourism, much of which is ironically based on industrial heritage.
We have a persistent partly hided unemployment, and large dependence by many households and families on part time low paid or insecure jobs
At the same time we have executives ion six figure salaries and have golden handshakes in comparison to workforces laid off at short notice – Thomas COOKED.
So the Working classes referred to, that voted to Leave, the most affected areas gave the establishment the kicking of a lifetime at the Referendum and I say this because the Tories are back in power planning to cook the books so that the executives and independents get the cake and the rest who voted to Leave get the crumbs.
The alternative and action needed comes in the next chapter….
