Peas

There is more to Please with Peas.UPDATED

Peas
BREAKING NEWS – ASDA PEAS FROM WORCESTERSHIRE – 2x 500gms = 1KG Podded ARE GIVING LESS FOR MORE – 400gms for £2.50
MAKING ALDI PEAS FROM SOMERSET THE BEST BUY.

Garden Peas, Podded Peas or Vining Peas

The Radical
28th June 2018

The Pea Harvest is upon us.

In fact it has been for several weeks

But for the Radical he picked enough peas for a meal for two yesterday

And because of the hot weather and drying wind extra watering is needed in his garden.

The Radical has been buying “podded peas” from Aldi for weeks

First from Somerset were Prelado variety an early pea with lots of flavour, small sweet  and

producing up to — gms of shelled peas per kilo for 2.38p per kilo (in 500gm bags)

These went into the freezer -those we didn’t eat

Next came Main crop Bingo variety also from Somerset with a heavier pod casing and less peas.

Just over — gms per kilo. Not so sweet and more solid but at 1.98 a kilo from Aldi (in 500gm bags)

You have to like podding peas to buy and eat this fruit

But if you have a freezer they are ideal for storage throughout the winter.

This year I grew my peas in plastic pots and the wind storms and heavy rains made short work

of flattening them even though every pot had a bamboo cane to support the 6 plants per pot.

About 50 pots will produce a good crop as we have laid the pots out on a recently cut lawn so

watering individual pots is only a matter of gong up and down 4 rows.

My varieties this year were Early Onward, Onward and Kelvedon Wonder.

Short fat and full to long thin, slim and sweeter.

So why the different names-

Vining peas will be harvested by machine and frozen or processed within hours.

Garden Peas are what I call mine

And Podded Peas is what the trades description act will accept.
The two important varieties are Early or Main Crop so take your pick.

Peas like easy working light land to grow in

but Asda compost at 3 bags for £10 does well for my pots.

That is because I have heavier ground where I grow potatoes, brocolli cabbage turnips and try

to grow carrots all in raised beds with bought in top soil.

And how do you make heavy ground lighter ?

Good farmyard manure or peat and composts from the garden centre or supermarket

One other way is to compost all you own garden and household vegetable waste in compost bins.

Mix that in with your soil for added body but dont forget to buy a soil testing kit

This year I bought a 25 kg bag of compound NPK fertilizer form Mole Country Stores for £10

A little under the potatoes etc.. does help.
