Public turns to butchers for quality meat
Butchers’ shops have seen a bumper trade with 630,000 more households visiting independent butchers year on year.
Analysis from Kantar from the 12 months ending February 21 showed the public spent nearly 50 per cent more per shopping trip compared to other retailers, with chops, roasting joints and sausages all popular.
And more than 50 per cent of shoppers were motivated to visit by the quality of the produce, according to a recent survey by Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC).
Thirty-eight per cent said they wanted to support local businesses.

HCC market development officer Kirstie Jones said: “Throughout the last 12 months, we have heard how customers have depended on their local butcher for food supplies, with many butchers adapting their business models and offering deliveries to serve their communities.
“It is heartening to see this represented in these new figures, showing people really do appreciate the quality and service their local butcher shops offer.”
HCC was also working with its Welsh Butchers’ Club members to support them with Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef marketing and promotional materials throughout the year.
