The guide doesn’t rank any of the cities, except to name Bristol as the overall winner.

But the City of Lincoln merits a high standard entry, praising its landmarks, heritage, house prices – and location.

“Gritty it ain’t. The cathedral city of Lincoln has cobbled medieval streets to meander through, historical tours to put everything into context, and stately homes, a castle and, of course, the cathedral itself to visit,” the guide says.

“But what’s it like to live there? The state grammar schools are excellent, London and Leeds are only an hour away on the train, and the average house costs only £127,673.

“On the fringes of the city are outdoor areas such as Whisby Nature Park and Old Wood. If you want to buy a five-bedroom detached family home in the area, you’re looking at about £280,000.

“WHY IT’S GREAT: Historic core and leafy outskirts.”

Spilsby in East Lindsey is ranked seventh out of Britain’s best towns.

Its average house price is £177,552, a 1`0.9 per cent rise inm the past 12 months.

Top of the towns’ list is Wadebridge, in Cornwall, with statistics of £336,612 and an 18 per cent average property price hike in the last year.
