Government plans to start vaccine roll-out next month

What happened?

People in the UK will start receiving the COVID-19 vaccine next month, with the bulk of the roll-out taking place in the new year, if the jab is approved by regulators, the government has said. Matt Hancock said he has formally asked the regulator – the MHRA – to assess the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine for use in the UK. The government has ordered 40 million doses of the Pfizer jab and expects 10 million doses by the end of the year.

Everyone vaccinated by April

All adults in England – of any age – could start to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before the end of January if supplies allow, leaked NHS documents show. Under the plan, every adult who wants a jab could be vaccinated by early April, according to the draft COVID-19 vaccine deployment programme, seen by the Health Service Journal.

‘Best-case scenario’

It comes as the head of England’s biggest NHS hospital trust said in a “best-case scenario” it could take until April to vaccinate enough people to make a difference to the pandemic. Dr David Rosser, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust chief executive, said: “It’s pretty clear vaccination is not going to appear en masse until probably the beginning of February at the earliest. It is encouraging, (that) there are signs we might have some vaccine to vaccinate care home residents and the most vulnerable before then. But the big truckloads of stuff is not going to come in before February – that seems pretty clear.”
