Joe Root, 254 magnificent runs, an English innings to be proud of –
The Radical- 24th July 2016
The 2nd day of the 2nd Test at Old Trafford, England v Pakistan
I am going to say that Joe Root rubbed every run,
over his first ton, all over Cooks face.
Did Root produce this score on purpose, just to let Cook know
he let him down when Cook made 105
and was out to a sitter when Root was on 87 ?
Has Root issued a determined warning to Cook that he is after his crown ?
If you played the game you will know what it means for partners
to back each other up,
whether it be two batsmen or bowlers, at the crease
or the slips and those in the field.
Cricket is a genuine team game.
The captain is more than the total and Cook who is an individualist, failed
and is looking to his personal position, not the team
which has on occasions been impressive, and on others, a bad start for the team
but he is no team member as Root is.
Praises for Woakes again both with the bat and ball
and a word for Bairstow’s, and their half centuries,
only for Jonny to have to rush off, change his batting pads, for the wicket keepers
and return to the field in hot and sticky conditions.
A word too for the Pakistani players who shown comradely ovation for Root
and the English teams achievement,
before having to bat after a long day in the field
and failing to prevent the Woakes and Stokes specials
taking the first 4 Pakistani scalps before close
Goodbye Hales Vince and Ballance
No more first crack at the opposition for Anderson and Broad,
though Anderson did send some snorters down.
And No more Moeen – we need Rashid
