The NFU has called out BBC presenter Chris Packham after he tweeted out an incorrect statement from the organisation.

Packham accused of spreading fake news on social media
In the tweet promoting veganuary,
Mr Packham said: “So half a million people have signed up to veganuary to reduce their food-related carbon footprint by 73 per cent in line with a 26 per cent increase in Waitrose plant based meals/products in 2020.
Even [the] NFU admits 25 per cent of the UK will be vegetarian/vegan by 2025. Why wait?”

But the NFU responded to Mr Packham’s tweet on Monday January 11, stating: “This is incorrect. We have not said this.”

Mr Packham added the source was from a Sainsbury’s report published in 2019, which cited the NFU’s Future of Food 2040 report.

However, it is understood the Sainsbury’s report misquoted from the NFU food report, adding to the confusion.

In a further response, the NFU tweeted the statement was inaccurate and included a link to their report.

NFU deputy president Stuart Roberts also questioned the robustness of Mr Packham’s accuracy checking.

“For the avoidance of doubt the NFU has never ever said this,” Mr Robert’s tweet ended.
