Former US ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton has criticized President Barack Obama’s foreign policy, saying Russian President Vladimir Putin evaluates him as a “weak leader.”
In an interview with radio program “the Cats Roundtable”, Bolton said Putin has taken advantage of Obama several times.
“I’m very worried that Putin, who can read a calendar just as well as the rest of us can, sees that Obama has two more years in office, and he will redouble his efforts during that period to get what he wants from Ukraine and other former republics of the Soviet Union, and other [former Soviet satellite nations],” he said.
He also warned that the situation in Europe would be critical and accused Obama of mishandling of the case.
“We’re in for a dangerous time in Europe for the next couple of years,” he said. “And yet the president doesn’t seem to pay attention anymore.”
The remarks came amid growing pressure by senior Democrats on Obama to increase Washington’s support for Ukraine. The Obama administration has so far refused to accept demands.
The tensions between Moscow and Washington have escalated after the United States imposed sanctions against the Kremlin over the Ukraine crisis.
The sanctions include restricting exports of American goods, services and technology to Russia’s largest oil companies.
In response, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev threatened to consider a ban on foreign flights over his country if sanctions were imposed on Russian energy companies.
European flights en route to Asia overfly Russian airspace. It saves the airlines at least four hours of flight time and up to about $30,000 per flight
